A new mother’s journey with breastfeeding

A Conversation with Kelly Armstrong - Registered Midwife - Orillia Midwives

Our topic was surrounding a new mother’s journey with breastfeeding

Here are eight important factors to consider:

Importance of Prenatal Preparation: There's a strong emphasis on the need for expecting parents to adequately prepare for labor and delivery. This includes understanding the stages of labor, managing expectations around pain, and even knowing the logistics of getting to the hospital. Lack of preparation can contribute to a more negative birth experience and potential trauma.

Breastfeeding as a Multifaceted Challenge: Breastfeeding is more complex than just the act of latching. Kelly highlights three key components: a successful latch, the baby's ability to nurse effectively, and the mother's milk supply. Each component can present unique challenges.

Age and Breastfeeding: There is a correlation between advanced maternal age and breastfeeding difficulties, particularly with milk supply. This highlights the need for age-appropriate guidance and support.

Individualized Breastfeeding Plans: There's no one-size-fits-all approach to breastfeeding. Kelly emphasizes the importance of working with each mother to develop a plan that aligns with her goals, whether that's exclusive breastfeeding, supplementing with formula, or other options like pumping or tube feeding.

The Importance of Support and Information: Access to accurate information and quality support is crucial for breastfeeding success. This includes knowledgeable healthcare providers, lactation consultants, and a supportive partner.

Partner Involvement Beyond Feeding: While breastfeeding is a primary focus, Kelly stresses the importance of partner involvement in other aspects of newborn care. This allows the mother to rest and recover while strengthening the partner's bond with the baby.

Mental Health and Well-being: Kelly acknowledges the emotional and mental toll that breastfeeding challenges can have on mothers. Holding space for their experiences, validating their feelings, and providing compassionate care are essential.

Shifting Focus from Challenges to Successes: The conversation underscores the need to reframe potential "failures" in breastfeeding. Meeting individual goals and prioritizing the overall well-being of both mother and baby are key takeaways.
